I’m a local resident in the Byron Shire Council LGA and am writing in relation to the Development Control Plan Housekeeping Amendments as part of council’s review of its Development Control Plan (DCP).

I am writing to support the proposed electrification requirements for newly built residential and commercial developments outlined in Chapters D1, D2, D3, and D4, for the following reasons.

1. Gas appliances are toxic for our health  
Hornsby Shire Council commissioned an extensive literature review of the existing, extensive peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating the health harms caused by indoor gas use. All-electric homes and businesses reduce indoor air pollution and improve the health of occupants.

2. All-electric buildings are cheaper to build and operate  
I understand that 350 Australia have compiled an extensive list of the most recent research reports that demonstrate that all-electric buildings are far cheaper to build and operate than gas-connected homes and businesses. The energy bill savings generated by all-electric homes are anywhere between $500-$16,000 per year, according to the analysis.

3. All-electric homes cut greenhouse gas emissions 
Since all-electric appliances use far less energy than gas appliances, they also produce less climate pollution. Council should take this opportunity to reduce community emissions at no cost to council by requiring all-electric new buildings across the LGA.
